TIL the cities of Monterey, California and Monterrey, Mexico are spelled differently despite being named after the same person, Gaspar de Zúñiga, 5th Count of Monterrey. There was no standardized spelling of his name at the time and each city simply chose their own spelling independently.
TIL A 170-person Swiss infantry unit once got lost during training exercises and inadvertently crossed 1.5km into Liechtenstein.
