I wonder if it would be useful to plot the diagonal as well in order to establish a baseline for how you feel about the input foods to begin with.
E.g. put your rating for "paprika+paprika" in order to indicate how much you like paprika on its own.
This could help normalise your other pairings. E.g. if you already love bacon, you'll love bacon + anything, but if you don't like balsamic vinegar on its own it would be interesting to see whether you liked it in combination with anything else.
Additionally, would it make sense to only plot the top diagonal? If I'm not mistaken, this is symmetrical around the descending diagonal anyway.
