It's cause of CTE.
All those head injuries are scaring parents away from letting their kids play which means they're also turning off the TV and not having it around so the kids don't pester.
Also, how the fuck is this /r/futurology related?
It's almost as though insulting your customers is bad for business.
Who could possibly have guessed?
This article seems to be ignoring RedZone and Sunday Ticket. While TV viewership is clearly down, like it is for everybody, they don't account for how many people are directly paying the NFL to watch their games.
For me, its the commercials. There's too many other things on TV without ads that I can watch and the NFL has WAY too many ads.
I was playing golf during the conference championships and chatted with an older fella after the round. We both mentioned how the course was a bit quiet for a Sunday, but still really busy for an NFL playoff weekend.
He said he hasn't watch a game since the whole kneeling during the anthem thing started. He was a vet and had a son that is currently deployed overseas. The kneeling thing for him was a dealbreaker and he quit watching after decades of being a fan.
CTE has been mentioned here already and I'm sure it plays a role. It seems like people have a lot of reasons not to watch nowadays. I don't think you can nail it down to one thing. It's really just not that good of product anymore.
